About North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), Shillong

The North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE) is located at Umiam village, about 20 km from Shillong city, Meghalaya. Nestled amid scenic surroundings, the Institute offers a peaceful and conducive environment for education and teacher training.

NERIE is a constituent unit of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi. It was established to meet the educational needs of the North Eastern states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

The foundation of NERIE dates back to 1982, when an NCERT Task Force headed by Dr. Madhuri Shah recommended setting up a regional centre in the North East. The Institute was officially established in 1995 and became functional on 22 March 1996 after the formal transfer of responsibilities from NCERT field offices.

Initially functioning as a field office, NERIE became fully operational in 2005 with the recruitment of a Principal and 24 faculty members by NCERT. The Institute later shifted to its present campus at Umiam in May 2012, where it continues to serve as a key centre for teacher education in the region.
